Service Description

Rather than focusing primarily on teaching the four DBT skills modules, this course explores how therapists use the broader DBT treatment model to assess behavior, prioritize treatment targets, strengthen skill use, and help clients create meaningful behavioral change. Participants will develop a foundation in the behavioral principles underlying DBT, including behavioral assessment, identifying prompting events and consequences, reinforcement, contingency management, and understanding the functions that behaviors serve. Clinicians will learn to approach problematic behaviors with curiosity and precision, moving beyond simply asking why a behavior occurred to examining the variables that maintain it and identifying opportunities for effective intervention. The training provides practical instruction in using DBT diary cards as an active component of individual therapy. Participants will learn how to introduce and individualize diary cards, review them efficiently during sessions, identify patterns in emotions, urges, behaviors, and skill use, and use the information gathered to determine session priorities and guide behavioral interventions. Particular attention will be given to the individual therapist's role in helping clients generalize and strengthen DBT skills outside of skills training. Clinicians will practice identifying opportunities for skills use, reinforcing effective behaviors, troubleshooting unsuccessful skill attempts, conducting behavioral and chain analyses, developing solution analyses, and using commitment and motivational strategies when clients struggle to engage in treatment or behavioral change. Prior attendees shared that the most valuable parts of the course was: "Conversation and explanation of different models to illustrate concepts within DBT."
