Service Description

Interpersonal difficulties are common across a wide range of clinical presentations and may include difficulty asking for needs to be met, saying no, setting boundaries, managing conflict, maintaining relationships, or advocating for oneself without sacrificing self-respect. This training provides clinicians with concrete, evidence-informed strategies for helping clients approach these challenges with greater confidence and effectiveness. Participants will learn to help clients identify and balance the three primary priorities of interpersonal situations: achieving an objective, maintaining or strengthening the relationship, and maintaining self-respect. Clinicians will explore how competing priorities, intense emotions, unhelpful beliefs, environmental factors, and skill deficits can interfere with effective communication and relationship functioning. The training provides practical instruction in teaching and applying core DBT Interpersonal Effectiveness skills. Participants will also explore strategies for helping clients determine the intensity of requests and boundaries, evaluate relationship priorities, validate others without abandoning their own needs, and negotiate interpersonal situations more effectively. Particular attention will be given to translating these skills from worksheets and acronyms into real-world behavioral change. Clinicians will learn strategies for identifying clients who may benefit from specific interpersonal skills, increasing commitment when clients are ambivalent about changing relationship patterns, role-playing difficult conversations, troubleshooting unsuccessful skill attempts, and reinforcing effective communication in individual and group therapy. Whether participants have extensive DBT experience or are new to the model, this training is designed to increase clinicians' confidence and competence!
